So I got the new iMac Pro - it arrived a week earlier than expected and I had to unbox it immediately.

Here's the rushed video of the unboxing: https://youtu.be/psENjn3CbT8

I'll do a review of it soon if anyone's interested. But for now, I'm very happy with it.

Yes it is expensive! Yes it is a huge financial investment. But I have been waiting for this machine for a good two years, and carefully saving my pennies and biding my time. I last bought my MacBook Pro in 2012 and so after 5 years, it's finally meeting its match when trying to be my main writing machine and video editing machine. It was time to invest in newer kit for the video editing side of things. Especially now that I'm playing around with 4K footage. And the MacBook Pro will mainly become my backup on the move machine for writing and only occasionally editing - until that too can be replaced (as it's not really good for more than 30 mins long HD projects). But this new iMac will be my main workstation from now on.

It looks kind of small in the picture, but that's only because there's a new 32" 4K monitor next to it.

31 essential AE scripts

I digress alot, you've probably noticed that. One day I am all about the writing and the next day it might be filmmaking... Luckily I have met a few people who have far more extreme interest swings than myself, so I know I'm not the only one and also that I often have it under control to some extent. Today I was searching for a 3D text tool and luckily my random and whip-fast attention span took me to this website quite by accident and I am glad I did!31 AE scripts logo

In their own words "If you have never used scripts before, you are missing out. These extensions to your AFter Effects arsenal can be invaluable. There are tons to choose from, they do a wide range of tasks, and new ones are being developed all the time. Lloyd Alvarez, our former editor actually runs AEscripts.com, an online marketplace and central hub for everything scripts in the AE Universe."

Visit the site and check out the demo movies: http://ae.tutsplus.com/articles/roundup/31-essential-scripts-from-aescripts-com/

I know great tools when I see them and these are great tools! The best bit is the pay-your-own-price business method. Why should there be piracy and theft when you can pay what you can towards rewarding the designers of tools that you will hopefully get much use out of and don't have to break the bank to do it?

Into the Blender

I am learning more about BLENDER - a powerful open source 3D program. The more I learn about this program the more I like it. It's just a pity the interface has such a steep learning curve, beyond other more well known [and very expensive] programs. But don't be deterred if you are thinking of learning it! There are masses of YouTube vids, websites and communities devoted to sharing the wealth of knowledge; as well as the excellent books and DVDs that you can buy to help fund more development of the tool, see what can be achieved with it and use the free source files to have a go yourself.

Check out the projects that have been created using Blender: http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/blender-open-projects/

Back on the Motion Graphics trail

I am back on the Motion Graphics trail, having to brush up on my After Effects and Motion skills, having been given a boot up the arris by seeing that Mark Christiansen has released an update of his excellent After Effects Studio Techniques book to the latest AECS4 and I am still working on AE7; and if I don't do it now, by the time I do finish working my way through his book it will be very out of date! With that in mind I see that Computer Arts have posted some excellent Motion graphics tips, as well as those brilliant guys from VideoCopilot.

Art Beats is also doing an After Effects "REAL WORLD FOOTAGE EFFECTS" podcast geared around working with Stock Footage.

So why do I care? When I am much happier just creating screenplays right now....
